Finding sources of RSS formatted newsfeeds

Well, now that you've got the JERSS servlet installed and figured out how to use it, you need to find some great RSS files to use and integrate into your site, right! Fortunately, these files are published by literally thousands of sources across the Internet, from the big names like CNN and BBC to niche media outlets like tech magazines, Slashdot, etc. Of course, the hard part is finding them.

  1. The first suggestion I have is to try NewsIsFree. NewsIsFree contains information about many, many newsfeed sources. Go to this page to browse the NewsIsFree sources by category and search for sources by keyword. When you look at the information page for a specific source, look for this logo: NewsIsFree XML/RSS logo; it means that source is published in RSS format. The logo is linked to the RSS version of the source…use that URL as the url parameter to the JERSS servlet. Not all sources publish their content in RSS format.
  2. Next, I would suggest trying Free Sticky. FreeSticky lists numerous sources of free and paid content for your website. Many of the sources listed have multiple means of syndicating their content, and most of those include an RSS channel. You'll have to go to the homepage of the source that interests you and nose around to find if an RSS channel exists.
  3. Finally, I would suggest a search in your favorite trusty search engine, like Yahoo!, Google, or Mamma. Try keywords like RSS, newsfeeds, syndicated content, etc.

Please let me know if you've found some great RSS files - I'll publish a link to them here and credit you with the discovery!
